Together to Victory
Honoring Canadians & Czech-Canadians Who Helped Save Czechoslovakia During World War II
Throughout World War II, Czechs could rely on their friends and compatriots in Canada. The most impressive stories written during those dark times include: the grand welcome to Canada of the Czechoslovak President in exile Edvard Beneš; the personal friendship between President Beneš and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King; the joint effort of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Sokols to defend the Czechoslovak Consulate General in Montreal against the Nazi takeover; the appointment of General Georges Vanier, the future Governor General of Canada, as the first Canadian Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (government in exile in London); the creation of the Czechoslovak National Alliance of Canada with 91 branches across the country; Czech-Canadian volunteers serving in the Canadian and Czechoslovak armies; major Czech-Canadian fundraising efforts; training of Czech RAF pilots in Canada; war production of the new Bata Shoe factory in the new town of Batawa; and much more. For forty years, the Czechoslovak communist regime tried to erase the stories of our transatlantic friendship, solidarity, bravery and sacrifice from our memory. It’s time to retell them.
Written, Directed and Produced by Bořek Lizec; Video Production and Editing Radek Háša; Narrated by Peter Whittaker; Graphic Design Karel Scherzer; Sound Petr Fink; Music Composed by Jiří Traxler & Oscar Morawetz
The documentary will premiere on October 28, 2020, at 8 p.m. ET as part of the online celebration of this year’s Czech National Day in Canada.
